Definition of a Hip Fracture
A hip fracture is a break in the femur, known as the thigh bone, just below the hip joint. Hip fractures mainly occur in the femoral neck, the part of the femur between the shaft and the rounded ball that fits into the pelvic socket, which makes up the hip joint.

Hip fractures are most common in people older than 65, mainly because the bones slowly lose minerals and become less dense as a person ages. Once bones start to lose their density, they become weakened, making them more susceptible to fractures during falls. In younger adults, hip fractures are usually caused by major trauma to the hip, such as a biking/sports injury or car accident.
